Many organizations have invoices, master meters or even detailed measurement data, but do not know exactly where and why their energy consumption changes. The task of energy monitoring is not merely to display data, but to reveal the relationship between operation and consumption.
The bill shows the cost but rarely the reason
The monthly bill is important financial data, but aggregated and delayed. It is not clear which building, technology or operating condition caused the deviation. This requires a suitable measurement structure, temporal resolution and operational context.
It is not necessary to measure each consumer separately. The goal is to find the measurement boundaries along which a responsible area, equipment group or intervention option can be separated.
There is no verifiable result without a starting state
A saving can only be understood in relation to something. The base can be an earlier period, a similar site or a corrected consumption model. Weather, opening hours, production volume and other circumstances that significantly affect use must be taken into account.
A mere "before-after" comparison can be misleading. If a building consumed less energy but operated for a shorter time or the weather was milder, the difference is not necessarily the result of the intervention.
A good indicator is suitable for action
In addition to total consumption, an indicator projected on the floor space, opening hours, manufactured piece or outside temperature can be useful. Proper normalization helps separate natural variation in operation from true variation in efficiency.
The alarm limit should not be simply an arbitrary number. It is worth tying it to a period, operating condition or dynamic expectation, and filtering out insignificant fluctuations with a delay or a durability condition.
Measure from data
A deviation is useful if it clearly names the affected site or measurement point, makes the expected cost impact visible and can be assigned to a responsible person. After the measure, the same method must be used to check whether consumption has permanently changed.
Where to start?
Not with the most measurement points, but with a well-defined, significant consumption area. A good first task might be to examine the nighttime base load, unjustified peak load, differences between sites or the operating status of a high-consumption device.
